HTML Charset is also called a Character Set or HTML Encoding.
A web browser must know which HTML charset to use, to display an HTML page properly.
The HTML charset has different encoding standards which assign some numbers to these character set.
Character Encoding:
There are different types of Character Encoding which are given below:
ASCII Character Set:
ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. This is the first-ever character encoding standard in HTML. ASCII has 128 alphanumeric characters which consist of alphabets(A-Z) and (a-z) and some special symbols like + – * / ( ) @.
ANSI Character Set:
ANSI stands for American National Standard Institute. ANSI is an extended version of the standard ASCII character set which supports 256 character sets. It is also called as Windows-1252, and it was default charset for Windows up to Windows 95.
ISO-8859-1 Character Set:
The ISO-8859-1 was the default character encoding in HTML2.0.
ISO-8859-1 was also an extension of the ASCII standard with international characters.
It also uses a full byte to show twice as many characters as ASCII.
UTF-8 HTML Charset:
In the HTML charset attribute is used to add character encoding.
UTF-8 is the default charset encoding for windows which is developed by Unicode Consortium.
This HTML charset supports 256 characters. UTF-8 has almost all the characters, punctuation’s and symbols.

The ANSI and ISO-8859-1 were so limited, HTML 4 also supported UTF-8. The default character encoding for HTML5 is UTF-8.
