Title Tag Optimization

What is Title Tag?

The title tag is an HTML tag that is present in the head section of every website to make the user understand the content of your page. It helps the users to decide whether or not the page will able to satisfy their requirements.
The keyword must be present in the title tag, the correct use of keywords in the title of every webpage is very important to Google, especially for the homepage.
Following are some points you should keep in mind while designing the title of a webpage:
  • Your title should be under 9-10 words or within 60 characters.
  • It is recommended to use the keyword at the beginning of the title.
  • Do not add your company name in the title unless your company name is very well known.

Why Title Tags are Important?

The title tag creates the first impression on a visitor’s mind and it plays an important role in SEO. So it is necessary to optimize the title tag.

SERP(Search Engine Results Pages):

The title of the webpage is the first thing that is displayed in the SERP when a user searches with some relevant keywords. It doesn’t matter your website is ranked higher or not but with an optimized title, it can surely attract web traffic.

Browser window:

When a user opens your website, the name of that page appears on the top of the browser window. So use related and unique keywords that make your webpage easily noticeable.

Social networking:

Social networking sites such as facebook, twitter uses their own title tag to display content which means you can use different tags for different pages, this will optimize your website in a better way.

How to Write a Title for SEO:

Title tag length:

Try to avoid a very long title because if you make your title too long then the search engine will omit the extra characters. The recommended length of the title is around 50-60 characters. Try to avoid the caps lock to save space as wider characters take more space. The use of longer titles will not cause you any penalty but it is good for using on social networking.
For example,
“Title Tag Optimization of SEO and How to Write an Title for Better SEO”
Google will cut some part of the title because of its length and it will appear as “Title Tag Optimization of SEO and How to ”.
Therefore, always keep in mind that the length of your title should not be too long.

Keep it unique:

Avoid using the same word repeatedly as a keyword because it can affect your SEO and search engine can lower down the ranking of the website.
For example,
branded watches, mens watches, watches and watches
Here words “watches” is used various times which can create a bad user experience. Therefore, always use new and unique keywords.

Place of keywords also matters:

Use the brand name at the end of the title as it can affect the CTR(Click-Through-Rate) of your website. But in case you want to promote your brand instead of your product Google can automatically detect your brand name to improve your website’s ranking.

Think about your visitors:

The title is the first thing the user will see, so it should look attractive to the visitors that can easily draw their attention. It should give the message that the user is looking for.

How to create a Good Title?

Following are some best practices you should follow for creating titles on pages:
  • Try to give a unique title to every page.
  • For better SEO, try to add primary search keywords in the title of every page.
  • Don’t depend on just 1-2 keywords instead create various keywords for the title tag.
  • If you want to add your company name, put it at the end of the title.
  • Try to use the best form, plural or singular, for your keywords based on what WordTracker says is searched on more frequently.
  • Don't repeat your keywords more than 2 to 3 times in the title.
  • Always make sure the <title> tag is the first element in the <head> section of your page, this makes it easier for Google to find the page.
